Hi there! I wanted to share another US-1 layout I recently built. This time, the goal was to fit as many action accessories as possible onto a ping-pong table.
I wanted both lanes to offer pretty much the same playing experience, so each lane has its own set of accessories for both the semi truck and the dump truck. This includes the Elevated Gravel Loader/Unloader, Crate Loader/Unloader, Trailer Terminals, Crane, Bulldozer, Dump Yard, and Pipe Loader. Fire Stations are used to switch between the dump truck and the semi truck.
The only major difference between the two lanes is that one has the Airport, while the other has the Wrecker Truck Garage and the Phone Booth Track. I don't have a Phone Booth Track yet (I need to 3D-print one), so I temporarily replaced it with another Dump Yard.
The track pieces are screwed onto four 6mm MDF boards that can be joined together and placed on my ping-pong table. I didn't add any borders around the boards, allowing the track to run right up to the edges and making the most of every inch of available space. I also made sure that nothing permanently sticks up above the tracks, so the sections can be stored flat against each other when the layout is dismantled, once the accessories and bridge track pieces have been removed.
One of the biggest challenges was optimizing the track layout to make everything fit into a 9 x 5-foot space. I ended up making a few custom track pieces: a 3" straight and two 9" double turnouts. I also made some custom supports for the bridge. It took quite a bit of planning, measuring, cutting, 3D-printing and tweaking, but I'm really happy with how it turned out.
The best part was seeing it in action. We had a family evening with the layout running almost nonstop, and everyone had a great time with it.
