The Army Kenworth wasn't part of the GI Joe set. There were two olive flatbed trailers one plain (GI Joe Set with Satellite Rocket). The other was marked US Army with crates. Army set had Kenworth and Dump Truck. GI Joe set had Peterbilt and Troop Truck.

Could someone shed some light on the differences in the fire trucks? I sold my original fire truck that came with my set. It was worn out. I purchased a much better one. Maybe I shouldn't have?

True - Three of those came in the Army Transport set and not the GI Joe set. The Cabover, the trailer with crates, and the army green dump truck. I will update my descriptions.

They came in at least 3 versions. Red plastic, white plastic painted red, and red plastic painted red. The painted ones are shinier than the unpainted red plastic. I don't know about the relative rarity of each version. I actually have every item on my list except for the Trucking Empire set. I saw that on Ebay recently, but did not want to pay $700 for a generic boxed set. If it would have been a box with graphics I would have purchased it.

The army set I purchased back in the day had dark brown crates. The set was open box, and I purchased from one of those clearance stores. So I don't know if those are correct. It was missing one.

What truck is this? Is it the same as 3902 only lighted?

I noticed that the retainer on the roof for the ladder is different between the painted one and molded red one, the old one has one of those nibs broken off.

There are only a small group of people in the entire world who even know about this or care, so it's not that big of an issue which you have IMHO

This also happens to be the most annoying of all the vehicles and readily available.

Yeah, I'm with you. I don't really care to much about all the different variations. I think some of that comes from Tyco switching manufacturing plants from the US to Hong Kong to Singapore and where ever else. BTW Mine is red plastic painted red. These for my understanding were made by Faller out of West Germany at the time.

Yes, the lighted trucks have holes in the top of the cab.

There are not a lot of variations in US-1. The green dump truck has the most, the red dump truck has 2 and the fire engine has 3. While it is true that most of the world don't care about that, many of the people that do are probably subscribed to this list. You are right, fortunately that one is cheap and there are lots of them on Ebay.

From what I've seen the early trucks all had clearance light holes in the cab roof and a black plastic piece that simulated the headlight, bumper light, and clearance lights on the roof, no light would go through it, the hole in it won't even fit the standard bulb. The black piece was then made clear and with a bigger hole for the bulb, some guy is selling printed clear ones on eBay, I pay less for a whole truck normally, and usually lit anyway. After that the non-lighted trucks had no clearance light holes in the roofs, no holes for the headlights. The early trucks didn't have the tab that holds the dump gate closed and modified the hinge pivot so the gate could slide up and down to release from the tab. Then there's Peterbilt logo or not on on the sides of the hood, look hard enough and you'll find something. Some guys are really into that, personally I could care less unless it increases value, then it a whole different story, when money talks I listen. :)

Two versions of the 3410, early one had black/red writing on the crane, no tab on the tracks.

Two versions of the 3415 differing on if the hands are painted on the dozer driver.

The 3420 has a tan floor on the dump bin, and a single slot on the track piece, the 3453 in retail form has a plain bin and a two slot track piece to interlock with the 3461.

The 3425 has 2 different bases, and the 3430 has three. And three colors of mechanism arms can be found.

I’m not aware of any differences in the 3435.

The 3440 has 2 different bases. Early ones are plain and later versions have two stop tabs at the bin.

AFAIK the original 7 accessories are the only ones with variations, except for the 3475 GI Joe rocket base can have either a 3440 or 3475 item number on the base. I’ve heard there were some rockets that had a red tip but I’ve never seen one.

So the 3414 (white box version of 3470), 3416, 3420-3 (overhead gravel hopper in the 3216), 3443, 3444, 3445, 3450, 3452, 3453, 3455, 3456, 3460, 3461, 3465, 3467, and 3470.

The track has both painted and non-painted versions. Of note the 3015 12”R 1/8 was only available through mail order/special order, as it wasn’t in the assortment packs and never in a set.

There are 4 terminal tracks: 3010 with switch, 3010 with center off/no switch, 3025 combined, and 3025z green. It’s difficult to pinpoint when the 3010 went from switched to no switch as some 1981 sets from catalogs have no painted lines. By 1982 the combined terminal was implemented so possibly the center off was a mid to late 81 version. There are two power packs, a 6.9 and 7.9 VDC. The 7.9 replaced the 6.9 in 1984. The 3706 9”R 1/8 has no known 30## number.

Assortment packs were bulk item offerings for distributors. Typically selling a selection of the available items for a given year. These numbers with the contents can be found in the Tyco catalogs. Here are the numbers:
3000, 3001, 3002 for track, 3780 for building kits, 3400, 3401, 3404, 3405 for accessories, 3990, 3993, 3989, 3985 for trucks, 3987 for lighted trucks, 3991, 3992, 3996 for vehicles, 3984 for stompers (imagine running into one of these with 6 each of the stompers on card!!!), 3992, 3994, 3995 for the trailers.

3901, 3902, 3905, 3912, 3937, 3938 cover the dump trucks, with the blue/yellow and Army dumps having no known item number.

3903, 3904, 3908, 3913, 3935, and 3939 cover the Pete cabs, with the GI Joe Pete having no known number. 3909, 3910, 3914 are the COE, with the Army COE having no known number.

The original 4 trucks (3901-3904) have clearance light holes molded into the cab roof. A black windshield insert was used. This later was used in the lighted versions. For the 3219 and 3228 a regular 3903 cab body was used, and three holes were drilled to fit the windshield insert for the lighted aspect.

I’ve tried to pin down which of the 4 were factory lighted, as I had a 3901 on card that was lighted from the factory. It would be too easy to just change the insert. So as of now I am fairly sure the 3901, 3902, and 3903 were factory lighted, the 3904 I am not so sure about. The 3901 has 4 known body variations, and depending on config can have as many as 9 different ways it was built.

3911 Fire Engine, 3918 wrecker.

3951, 3952, 3953, 3954, 3955, 3956, 3957 are the vehicles. All but the 3957 can have painted and non painted versions.

3962, 3963, 3965, 3966 are the stomper trucks.

3585 is the tune up kit, 3594-3599 cover mail order service parts, while 3797-3799 cover retail repair parts. Of note the 3594 is replacement stomper tires, 3595 is the dump/vehicle chassis and 3596 is a truck chassis complete.

The trailers are 3925, 3926 for the belly dumps, with two versions each. The original 6 trailers have black dots painted on the landing gear. There are also variations in the freight trailers dealing with the chassis. Whether it is silver, grey, or somewhere in between.

The 3927-3930 cover the original box trailers with there being 2 or maybe 3 of the 3927, it was discontinued in 1983 and came back in 1984. The 3928 has at least 3 versions, the 3929 and 3930 have two versions, maybe 3. The 3948 has two versions as well. Then the Roadway in the 3061 and 3061B. The 3061 is the same trailers with a different card. I have both, and the 3061 is SUPER hard to find.

The 3931 and 3932 are the flat beds. I’ve heard of two versions on these dealing with a tab somewhere on it. Then the GI Joe and Army flats.

Then the 3940-3943 tankers. Of note is the 3941 Exxon with the more rare version having the corporate Exxon logo. And the Coke trailer from the 3061/B.

And the 3946 Auto Transporter.

The track accessories are the 3768, 7849, 7850, 7851.

Also I think the 3467 is for the flasher accessory with the track having a 3034 number.

There were around 35 sets made. These are only counting domestic US items. And it covers retail and catalog sets. Some catalog sets were the same as the retail set. Some were the same but have a unique item number like the 3330 Highway Overpass Montgomery Wards set. Same as a 3216 but has a 33## number. Also like the Sears 3201, but they called it a 2-action station set. Sears made no mention of the Tyco name on either it or the 3205 3-action station set. There was the 7-action station set as well. It mimicked the 3215 Long Haul from Montgomery Wards but both used a different layout than what the retail 3215 used.

Jeeze what a wall of text… I think I hit mostly all the numbers though. There are some things I didn’t mention like the 48 G 28073 3910 and 3930 and 48 G 28074 3909 and 3926 Montgomery Wards catalog specials.

I actually did get a 48 G 28017 Montgomery Wards 3456/3911 catalog combo with an original label. So absolutely stupidly rare to have that simple label.

I have a 3445FL Exxon Truck Stop with foreign languages printed on the box, I guess for foreign country sales. Does the FL stands for foreign language?

I never seen one with FL on it TBH. Most of them I’ve seen had the item number with just an L. Like 3445L.

Do you see a code starting with 95-0 on it?

There were a lot of export items made. I’ve seen Italian, French, and multi-language items. I am not sure what all were actually made, but I’ve seen gravel hoppers, gravel dumps, culvert loaders, I think an airport, crate loader and unloader, garage, and several different sets. Carded trucks/trailers too and they just have a plain card.

My guess is that it is a Canadian export. And the F is for French and the L is for Language.
